Sea Angling: Angler's catch tips the scales

DARLINGTON anglers Dave Turnbull and Steve Coverdale took the top two categories in South Shields and District Sea Angling Club Annual Open Competition.

Both chose to fish the rough ground at Whitburn, Turnbull returning to the scales with a cod of 8lb 1oz 2drams to take the £600 for the heaviest fish, while Coverdale came to the scales with three cod for 12lb 8oz 12drams to take the £300 for the heaviest bag.

The duo also took the pairs with 20lb 9oz, Turnbull also taking the heaviest fish pool and Coverdale the super pool for the heaviest bag, with Turnbull third, which should keep their bank managers very happy.

With the usual big bags of smaller fish not arriving cod anglers certainly took pride of place.

Richy Carr of Sunderland was third overall with two cod for 10lb 11oz 6drams, and second in the super pool for the heaviest bag and also had the third heaviest fish a cod of 6lb 9oz 8drams, taken from the Wherry, Jay Kelly taking the second heaviest fish a fine cod of 6lb 9oz 10drams.

With a strong field of lady anglers out Lillian Williamson did exceptionally well to win with two fish for 3lb 3oz.

It was also close in the junior section with 14-year-old James Mason winning with five whiting for 2lb 12oz 4drams taken at Hebburn, with Euan Lewthwaite second with three fine flounder for 2lb 8oz 4drams.

Andrew Hodgkinson fished Church Bank, taking the heaviest flatfish a fine flounder of 2lb 6drams.

Bob Gascoigne and Gary Foster where second in the team event with 13lb 8oz, Ernie Moon and Barry Robson taking third with 10lb 14oz. Altogether 372 seniors and 18 juniors fished, with 355lb of fish weighed in.

FAMOUS Hartlepool took 71 codling 4-8lb and 42 ling 7-12lb, and unbelievably a few mackerel.
