Caldy 41 Westoe 39

WESTOE’S National Two North promotion ambitions were dented in a fast and furious game in which the home team stole victory in the dying minutes.

It was a great fightback by Caldy who were 27-10 adrift at half-time.

They scored four tries – including a penalty try – after the interval to inflict only the fourth defeat on the second top Shieldsmen.

The killer came in the 77th minute when left winger Craig Ross burst over under the posts after strong pressure on the Westoe try line.

Fly half Richard Vasey’s educated left foot made it a crucial seven points with a flawless performance of four conversions and two penalties. Westoe took the honours before the break with two tries by flanker Jonathan Okwe-Pearson and centre James Clark.

But after flanker Adam Aigbokhae went over soon after the resumption it became a nerve-jangling thriller.

Westoe’s defence was breached more often than in any of the previous 20 games in their league campaign by young and thrusting opponents, but tries by prop Gareth Nesbit and flanker Joe Maw meant that Westoe came away with two bonus points.
