Hull Ionians 16 Westoe 30

WESTOE kept promotion ambitions on track with a late surge that brought victory over spirited opponents.

This had not looked likely when midway in the second half Ionians had taken control.

But the tide turned after fly-half Mike Bedworth kicked a 40-metre penalty to level. Suddenly it was Westoe who piled on the pressure that led to a penalty try.

In extra time a driving scrum thrust flanker Joe Maw over, Bedworth kicking his third conversion to add to two penalties and a drop goal.

It was Ionians who had gone ahead with a penalty and unconverted try in the first quarter.

Westoe centre David Haswell burst over and five points from Bedworth’s boot gave the visitors a 10-8 half-time lead.

The hosts took advantage of opponents reduced to 14 men by a yellow card and attacking resulted in prop Simon Jenkins reclaiming the lead for his side but Westoe, fought back to claim the win.
