NIALL QUINN says Sunderland’s billionaire backer Ellis Short wants to turn the Black Cats into a Chelsea-style success story.
Sunderland’s Premier League future will be decided this afternoon as they take on Chelsea in the final game of the season at the Stadium of Light.
And Sunderland are expected to confirm in the next couple of weeks that majority shareholder Short will take full control of the club.
Chairman Quinn revealed that Short was not interested in buying into one of the Premier League’s Big Four, but wanted to help an underachieving club realise its full potential – just as, on a far bigger scale, Roman Abramovich has at Chelsea.
“I think Ellis will explain himself fully if he does come over the line,” said Quinn.
“But he has a history of getting involved with assets that have been weakened or depressed and realising their potential.
“He didn’t want to take on a huge club like Arsenal or Manchester United – there’s no success story to write there.
