“We had about nine injuries and any side with that many is going to find life difficult. Hopefully we are over the worst of it now.
“January is the month where the transfer window opens but for us it is also the time when we are getting our injured players back, so we will be stronger no matter whether we sign players or not.”
Injuries have restricted former Middlesbrough, Barcelona and Liverpool midfielder Zenden to just a handful of games since he signed for Sunderland in October, but he was due to return to action against another of his former clubs, Chelsea, yesterday.
“It’s been a frustrating time for me because I haven’t been fit for three or four games in one spell,” said the 33-year-old.
“I’ve had two hamstring problems since I’ve been here and that’s been really bad luck, because I haven’t had a muscle injury in the five years prior to that. But it’s something I have dealt with, I’m fit again and now I just want to get a run of games.”
