LONDON was proving to be an unhappy hunting ground for the Black Cats as they again faltered in their attempt to beat the drop.
Howard Wilkinson’s men made it 10 games without a win and should have been beaten by more but for the heroics of keeper Thomas Sorensen.
Sunderland were undone inside the first 15 minutes by an inspired Gus Poyet, but soon equalised through Kevin Phillips’ eighth goal of the season.
The Wearsiders’ had a good chance to go in front when Michael Proctor fluffed his lines but their resistance was broken seconds before half-time when Gary Docherty was on hand to turn the ball past Sorensen.
The game was put beyond all doubt, continuing a run of just one win in 13, as Simon Davies and Teddy Sheringham, scoring his 300th goal, completed the rout in the second half.
