Table-top depiction of gallery

A painting of Waygood's city centre site is the latest billboard in the Harker Herald series outside Waygood's Gallery's temporary home in Byker and is scheduled to be installed this morning.

The painting, Waygood on a Table with Wings, will be on display throughout June and is the first in a new series of paintings by Helen Smith, artist and founder of Waygood Gallery & Studios.

It depicts the Wards Building, a large warehouse on High Bridge awaiting redevelopment into galleries and studios, on a table with wings.

Helen said: "Placing Waygood onto a domestic table-top achieves the aim of reducing the building to a scale that allows it to be viewed as a complete form.

"This symbolises the necessity to `stand back' from a project, which began in 1995.

"It involves the consideration of an architectural form and its context in Newcastle as a historical object, a meeting place, a cultural venue for viewing and discussing art, and a home for an international community of artists."
