Opera debut for company

The new Newcastle Area Chamber Opera makes its debut this evening with a concert performance, in costume, of Handel's Rinaldo in the King's Hall, Newcastle University.

The opera, Handel's first British commission, was premiered in London in 1711.

It tells of Rinaldo, a Christian soldier during the Crusades, his love for Almirena and his tussle with Armida, sorceress Queen of Damascus.

The new company is the brainchild of Newcastle-born tenor and vocal coach Austin Gunn who directs this performance, sung in Italian to piano and harpsichord.

The cast comprises young talent and professional singers with the title role performed by counter tenor James Laing.
