Winters' end

Shelley Winters, the outspoken star who graduated from blonde bombshell parts to dramas, died of heart failure yesterday.

The 85-year-old actress, born Shirley Schrift, had been in hospital since October after a heart attack. She won two Oscars and her films included Diary of Anne Frank, A Place in the Sun, and The Poseidon Adventure.

She had romances with Burt Lancaster, William Holden, Marlon Brando, Errol Flynn and Clark Gable. Explaining that money was tight as a child, Shelley once said: "I developed a fantasy world. Reality was too unbearable. Every chance I got, I was at the movies."
