Bill Why-aye man signs on

Bill Wyman

Wrinkly rocker Bill Wyman met fans to sign copies of his new book, which he described as "perfect toilet reading".

The 69-year-old former Rolling Stone was at WH Smith at the MetroCentre to publicise The Stones: A History In Cartoons.

"It's a bit of fun, a nostalgic look back at my career, aided by cartoons and caricatures which I have been collecting for 40 years," he said.

"It's an autobiography with a difference, I suppose.

"I've collected about 5,000 cartoons and caricatures of me and the Stones over the years and just thought it was be a good and novel way of taking people through our career," he said.

"It's been great to put little comments next to the drawings. You can so often get precious about your career. Here, though, I have taken a step back and had a bit of a laugh. It was good to have a laugh at myself."

Next time he is in the region, it is likely to be on a stage, performing with his Rhythm Kings band.

"Newcastle will definitely be on the agenda," he said.
